Danniel Burnham was the lead architect at the 1893 Chicago's World Fair. Throughout the book, Burnham is battling the tasks of living up to creating a fair like no other but having to do it on a fixed schedule in some of the worst conditions one can be forced to build with. His partner, John Root, passes away midway through the book and Burnham is left to accomplish the outstanding task of building a world's fair that will stand out and shine across America.

H.H. Holmes is the manipulative serial killer that adds a lot of tension to Erik Larson's portrayal of Chicago's World Fair. He swiftly carries out many crimes and lures in women like no other man could. His character is dark, mysterious, and somewhat appealing at times. His psychopathic personality adds a very entertaining aspect to the novel. His picture can be seen below.

He was elected for his second term at the beginning of the fair and pleaded that he wanted to show the world the true side of Chicago, a beautiful and extravagant city. He was assassinated by Patrick Pendergast before he could finish his second term.

Bertha Palmer was in charge of the Board of Lady Manager, which put her in charge of designing the Chicago World Fair's Women's Building. She not only led the Women's Building project but also lead many suffrage movements at the time.
Fredrick Olmstead-
Fredrick Olmstead was in charge of the fair's landscape. He put countless hours of time and hard work into making sure that the fair provided the public with beautiful exhibits and entertainment . He was ill for most of the book but continued to fight through his pain to create the monumental structures covering the fair.
